Larry Weiss Behind my studio is an estuary of the Great South Bay. My world is filled with boats and birds, also beaches, bridges, dunes, lighthouses and salt mars phes. I have spent most of my life on the south shore of Long Island, and love seeing it and painting it. Most of my paintings are done using acrylic paints on panels of hardboard such as “Masonite” or Foamcore. All the materials are referred to by experts as archival. This means that they are expected to last a very long time without fading or becoming brittle. All of my acrylics are easily cleaned. Masonite- Pieces are cut from a 4’ x 8’ sheet of Masonite. They are coated with Gesso before painting. Foamcore- is a standard art material. It consists of a Styrofoam core laminated between strong layers of paper like plastic, I coat it with Gesso before painting. Laminate- I make painting surfaces by laminating archival surfaces such as papers or plastics to either Masonite or Foamcore. Gesso- is a standard material for surfacing canvas or any other surface upon which to apply oil or acrylic paint. Varnish- All of my paintings are sealed with a barrier layer of acrylic, and then varnished with an acrylic varnish, (so that the work can be easily cleaned) All of my paintings (except watercolors) can be wiped with a moist sponge anytime.
