Lilian Masten

Born inScotland, Lilian Masten lived in London and New York City before moving to Port Jefferson. She received her BA and MS in Art Education from Adelphi and taught art in Lindenhurst and Brentwood before retiring. She has since intensified her own personal exploration of art, studying with many private teachers and attending local and national art workshops.

As an evolving artist, Lilian’s newest work is not limited to literal and realistic representations. She has begun incorporating collage and mixed media into her watercolors, successfully manipulating shapes and colors to produce somewhat abstract, yet recognizable essences of reality. Her source of inspiration still remains the mountains and the sea. Masten gives a truly unique and personalized viewpoint to the landscape. Lilian’s work includes opaque and transparent watercolor paintings, as well as mixed media and collage and mono-prints.

A frequent traveler, Lilian makes sketches, takes photographs and, time allowing, paints on sight. “My aim is to generate works in which the visual images will help the viewer come with me to that place, moment in time, or emotion as I experience it via my art,” says Lilian.

Lilian’s work has been seen in numerous local shows and her watercolors have gained the positive attention of jurors, resulting in many awards. Her paintings can be found in private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad. She is one of the owners of the Phoenix Fine Arts Gallery and a member of The Art League of Long Island, South Bay Arts Association and Wet Paints Studio Group.
